In addition to these actions, the act of installing urban furniture, in this case six benches, in a residual lot in a peripheral neighborhood of Vigo, provides some functional improvement in the space where they were installed. Furthermore, this project encourages the creation of a rewarding personal and collective experience which serves, like others, to keep the spirit and the mood, as well as, to go on in contention for other more complicated projects with longer time for being developed.
It was also intended to ward off from replicate other groups approaches that take too much time and effort to be build, and in the documentation of their alternative furniture designs; projects that are often financed by municipalities that do not allow their use on public roads, except for specific events. Thus, the confrontation which presumes the location of such public objects is eventually lost, and it relegates them to be whatever element that can be exposed in different media exhibitions.
The contribution of our friend Alfonso Roman with six pallets, twelve traffic cones and needed concrete for start (material from his own construction), demonstrated again his complicity with our way of producing architecture and city.
Evaluation and Protocols
In our case, the contribution of Alfonso Román with materials resources allow a quick execution, which arises in broad daylight and without any license, situation completed with the unexpected appearance of two municipal experts who ask for the installation of benches.
The first negative reaction from them not ends in a denunciation but also, shortly after that, the city hall cleaned the site and installed luminaires.
Although, the volume of the project is very small (it reduces the installation of six benches in a small residual lot), the important thing is that a process that appears outside of a negotiating with the public entity, becomes a spontaneous collaboration without the feeling of ownership produced by the city hall.
This is one of the projects that helps more personally to remember the immediacy of certain actions, always feed for larger projects.
